When I saw the hashtag, #BlackBoyJoy, trending on social media for the first time, I was ecstatic. As a Black millennial woman, I have to admit that I didn’t know a lot about the mental health issues affecting Black millennial men.
But, have no fear!
I happen to know a few who were gracious enough to share who they’ve been following and the content that they love. A special shout-out to my homie, Jimmy, who came in clutch especially clutch with the recommendations. You can find his awesome photography at @capturedbycacho. Swing him a follow or two!
@safespaceandwellness
This was one of Jimmy’s latest recommendations so yet another shout out to him again! This page is curated by an LMSW in New York City who has chosen to remain anonymous. But, whoever is running this page is posting the gems! Often, our Black men come face to face with themes of toxic masculinity within our society. But, our Black men need love too! On this page, you will find much-needed tips to help Black men love themselves in a society that tries to break Black millennials down. For example, do you know your self-care love language? No? Head to this page and get up on this knowledge.
Dr. Bryon Young, MD – @wedoingitwell
As a medical student, I can tell you that I can count the number of Black millennial men medical students (wow! tongue twister ting!) at my school on my two hands and maybe one foot. So, whenever I meet a Black man with an MD, I have to give them their props. Without further adieu, meet Dr. Bryon Young! He is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist raised in Louisiana on a mission to bring mental health to underserved communities. He is the founder of Doing It Well, an emotional wellness project catered to underrepresented communities in the mental health space. On Dr. Young’s page, you will find informational articles, mental health tips to lower daily stress, and the difference between hustling and aligning.
@talk2mac_therapist
Do you need help with your relationships? Look no further than the therapist behind @talk2mac_therapist! He is a Black mental health counselor, Gottman Certified Level 1, and specializes in couples therapy. The millennial timeline is a weird one – some of us are settled down with a kid on the way, some of us are trying to get over a harsh break-up, and some of us aren’t even thinking about marriage. But, I think we all want to move past the idea that our Black men are just players. Our brothers want healthy relationships as well – family, friends, and romantic! On his page, you can find gems that help our Black men learn their love languages, dealing with red flags in relationships, and how to re-energize as a Black man.
